Understanding Image File Formats (JPEG v PNG)
When uploading images, choosing the right file format is key to achieving your desired results. JPEG and PNG are designed for different purposes, especially regarding transparency and quality.
-
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
-
Main Purpose: This format is best for photographs, complex images with many colors, and web content where a small file size is a priority.
-
Transparency: JPEG files do not support transparency. If you upload a JPEG with a transparent background, the transparent pixels will be filled with a solid color, usually black.
-
Compression: Uses "lossy" compression, which permanently discards some image data to reduce file size. This is why you can select a Quality level (Low, Medium, High) to control the file size and quality trade-off.
-
-
PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
-
Main Purpose: This format is best for logos, icons, graphics, screenshots, and images that require a transparent background or sharp, crisp lines.
-
Transparency: PNG files support an "alpha channel" to preserve transparency. This allows images to blend seamlessly with the background of your storyboards.
-
Compression: Uses "lossless" compression, which means the image retains its perfect quality no matter how many times it's saved. Because of this, the Quality option is not applicable and is removed for PNG files.
-
By understanding these differences, you can choose the right file format to ensure your images look and function exactly as you intend them to in your storyboards.
