The entire Org Chart Configuration Panel can be toggled closed or open by clicking on the arrow or right hand side of the panel.
To drill down the Org Chart hierarchy click on the pill button at the bottom of the Org Chart Card. To drill up the hierarchy, hover over the card and click on the arrow that appears. The card in focus or being analyzed will appear highlighted.
Left clicking your mouse on the canvas background will let you drag and move the Org Chart around and the display can be zoomed in and out using the mouse scroll-wheel. The floating docker on the top right of the canvas can also be used to center and to zoom the Org Chart. Click on the magnifier icon to search the Org Chart.
Saving Org Charts to the Insight Library
An Org Chart that has been configured in Explore can be saved to the Insight Library (Introduction to the Insight Library) or pinned to a Storyboard.
To save to the Insight Library, click on the save icon > Select or Create a New Category and type in the Insight Name.
Pin an Org Chart to a Storyboard
To pin to a Storyboard, click on the action dots > Select Pin to Existing Storyboard or Pin to New Storyboard > Select or Create a Storyboard and type in the Tile Title.
Using Org Charts within Storyboards
You can add an Org Chart into a Storyboard that includes other charts and tables and another core use case is to add it to fill the entire Storyboard page.
Because the Org Chart has its own search and drill-down features, the Storyboard Filter Bar doesn’t apply to the contents of the Org Chart tile.
For users that have the permission to create Org Charts, you are able to ‘Explore’ the Org Chart from the Storyboard tile, which takes you to the Org Chart editor where you can make changes and update the Storyboard, or just save it to your Insight Library.
Technical Notes on How Data and Role Based Permissions Work in Org Charts
-
How the Org Chart query works, and
-
How the Org Chart is displayed with Data Access Permissions and RBS
The Org Chart query is run using the same logic as an Explore (Chart & Tables) query on One Models query engine except that each level of the Org Chart is queried one level at a time when drilling down. At each level of the Org Chart the child nodes are included as you navigate down.
If you were to build a query in Explore with the same information as an Org Chart it might look like this:
Any dimensions that are included as data items in the Org Chart are queried at Level 1. Therefore if additional dimension level data is required these should be included as data columns
When a Storyboard with an Org Chart tile is shared with a user with restricted permissions the data is secured under the Data Access Role permissions and rules. Examples of expected behavior:
Scenario 1: Data Access Role permissions for Metrics, Dimensions, Columns
-
User A has access to all Metrics, Dimensions and Columns
-
User B has access to all Metrics, but does not have access to Gender Dimension and does not have access to Position ID column
Scenario 2: Data Access Role rules applied not using the Org Chart Structural Dimension
-
User A has no security rules applied
-
User B has security rules applied on Organisational Unit DImension
-
The Org Chart is created using the Structural Dimension - Manager
User A
User B
In this scenario the entire Manager Org Chart is drawn. The metric query only returns the result (e.g. EOP Headcount) for the Organisational Units that the user is permissioned to see. User A = 349012 at level 1. User B = 60631 at level 1.
The non-metric query will display dimensions or columns for the Organisational Units that the user is permissioned to see. User A = all Gender and Position ID. User B = Gender and Position ID where the intersection of the Organisational Unit and Manager structure is permissioned.
Scenario 3: Data Access Role rules applied using the Org Chart Structural Dimension
-
User A has no security rules applied
-
User B has security rules applied on Manager Dimension
-
The Org Chart is created using the Structural Dimension - Manager
User A
User B
In this scenario the Manager Org Chart is drawn only from where the permission is granted. The metric query and non-metric query will display results as permissioned.
