Tables expand / collapse

The table expand/collapse feature lets you bring multiple levels of the same dimension into a list query, then expand or collapse through those levels directly within a Storyboard tile. This keeps your tables clean and easy to navigate, while still giving viewers access to detailed drill-down data.

Good to know: Each query is limited to 1,000 dimensions and nodes per level. Queries that exceed this limit will be too large to process and you will see a warning message.

How to Use Table Expand / Collapse

Step 1. Build Your Query

In Explore, create a list query and include all the dimension levels you would like viewers to be able to expand and collapse through. You can bring in every level or just a select few.

For example, if your organisation uses four Sup Org levels, you could bring in all four to allow full drill-down from the top of the hierarchy to the bottom.

Step 2. Pin the Query to a Storyboard

Pin your query to a Storyboard tile. Note that expand/collapse is a Storyboard feature and not available directly within Explore (similar to change indicators, sparklines, etc.).

Step 3. Enable Expand / Collapse in Tile Settings

  1. Click the pencil icon in the upper right-hand corner of the Storyboard to enter Edit Mode.
  2. Hover over your table tile and click Tile Settings (the colour palette icon).
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the settings list and expand the Expand / Collapse section.
  4. Toggle the setting to On.

Tip: Turning off pagination tends to make this feature easier to use.

Step 4. Navigate the Levels

Once enabled, the table will initially display only the nodes from the first level of your dimension. For example, if Level 1 of your Sup Org contains only "CEO Jordan," that's all you'll see at first.

To drill deeper:

  • Click the expand icon next to a node to reveal its children at the next level.
  • Click the same icon again to collapse back up.

Viewers can expand any node at any level, so they can explore exactly the part of the hierarchy they're interested in.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Permissions: If a user doesn't have access to the expand/collapse feature, the tile will simply display as a standard table, exactly as it appeared before the feature was enabled.
  • Large queries: This feature does not currently work on queries that are large enough to require export for viewing. If you run into this limitation, please refer to this Guide.
