This article explains how to connect One Model data to Tableau. Please read the article on connecting to an ODBC Driver first.
Below are the high-level instructions for connecting One Model to Tableau. For specific details on your Redshift cluster, please work with a member of the One Model Support Team.
Before connecting to One Model using Tableau you must first have the Desktop Edition installed. You can find it along with Tableau's Licensing terms and costs on their website here.
Tableau uses the ODBC driver to connect with the One Model database. If you use the 64-bit version of the Tableau Desktop software on your machine, you will need to ensure you have the 64-bit version of the ODBC driver installed, if you use the 32-bit version of Tableau Desktop, you will need to use the 32-bit version of the ODBC driver. For more information on setting up ODBC drivers, please see the One Model article on connecting to an ODBC driver. If you are installing this driver for the first time, you can download it from the Tableau driver's page to ensure you are using a version that is compatible with Tableau.
Step 1
This is the first screen you see when you open Tableau. To get started connecting to OneModel, the first thing you need to do is click on the Connect to data button
Step 2
Next you need to select the type of connection you wish to make from Tableau. When connecting to your One Model database, you need to select Amazon Redshift from the On a server menu
Step 3
You will then be presented with connection details screen. You will need to fill out the connection details for your user so that you can connect to the One Model database. These connection details can be obtained from One Model support if you have purchased the direct connection part of the platform. The screen will look similar to the one below once filled out.
Step 4
If you are not using a version of the ODBC driver which is compatible with Tableau, you will see the following message. You will need to get the latest version of the drivers from the Tableau site and update the drivers on your system.
Step 5
You should now be connected to the server. You will be able to view the tables in each of the available schemas by selecting the Schema dropdown dialogue.
Step 6
The next step is to design your query. In the below example we are going to look at the Employee Event table and create a join to the Event Reason object. This will allow us to make measures such as Hires, Terminations or Internal Movements in the Worksheet. Once you are finished creating the joins in the data set that you are going to need for your Worksheet click the Go to Worksheet button.
Step 7
This is an example chart that shows the number of internal movements that are happening each year from the start of the data for this example company.
Note: you should always be careful to select the SSL option or specify the SSL mode as required wherever it is available. SSL is used to encrypt all of the communication between your client machine and the OneModel database that you are using. If you don't select this option the transmission of data and queries may not be encrypted. The screenshots will have the SSL options setup as you would want them as a minimum. If you are unsure how to set them up, use these as a guide.
